Nea Ionia in Magnisia, capital of the Municipality of Nea Ionia, is a city of 33.000 people in population, mainly it consists of industry workers. It was founded in 1924 by 3.000 emigrants from the Asia Minor and Pontus, who mostly lived in the ‘prosfigika’ area. Until 1947 it was part of the Municipality of Volos and Pagason. River Krausidonas divides the two cities. Patron Saint is Euaggelistria.
The 3d High School of Nea Ionia was founded in 1984. In the beginning it was situated in a school complex opposite the Nea Ionia Cemetery. In January 1992 was relocated to the new-build facilities (2.234 square metres) in the north-west of the city, between “METKA” and the old Cotton factory, next to the Volos-Larisa railway.
It’s part of a larger school block along with the 8th Elementary School and the 6th Kinder Garden. The large playground (7.600 square metres) was modulated by the former students and teachers under an Environment Education Course. The facilities were completed in 1994 when the school gymnasium opened. The majority of the 330 students (2009-2010 school year) are children of factory workers and employees.
